Shayna Meyer has been regularly showing cow horses for 2 and a half years. She was introduced to the sport by a friend and quickly decided she had to get involved. As a bronc rider’s daughter, Meyer had plenty of confidence in her riding so she found going down the fence was a blast. She now owns a bridle horse that she has been learning on and showing.

Almost every year Meyer travels to Texas to watch the World’s Greatest Horseman. She loved seeing Canadian trainer John Swales win the title for the second time in 2020. It’s hard to show regularly in Canada so she had a great appreciation for all of the work that went into that win and was elated to see a Canadian take it out.

A common thread among the cow horse community is how kind and helpful the people are, which Meyer especially enjoys. It’s such a tough sport she said, but that is what brings everyone together. Meyer loves the challenge of competing in cow horses and is focusing on her reining patterns, developing her stops and improving her technique.

She hopes to win a NonPro championship at some point. While dedicated to her family, Meyer also said there’s no time like the present to pursue your dreams.

“We don’t have a lot of trainers here in [British Columbia]. Being able to watch other people, there is no better way to learn. The variety of the teachers and my need to truly be able to educate myself is what drew me to the membership.”
